South Dakota Women’s Basketball Adds Junior College Standout Harrington

1 May

South Dakota women’s basketball coach Ryun Williams has announced that Polly Harrington of Kansas City, Mo., has signed a letter of intent to continue her career with the Coyotes.  Harrington, who is transferring from Johnson County Community College in Overland Park, Kan., will have two years of eligibility remaining at South Dakota.

“Polly is a really neat young lady and a player with a very good skill set,” Williams said. “She is a very physical and strong player inside and also has a great feel for playing on the perimeter.  Her versatility will fit in nicely with our system. Polly comes to us from one of the best junior colleges in the country and she has been extremely well-coached during her time at JCCC.”

Harrington, a 5-foot-11 forward, enjoyed a strong sophomore season at JCCC, where she earned All Region VI first-team and All-East Jayhawk Conference second-team honors.  She averaged 11.1 points and 6.7 rebounds per game and shot 50 percent (156-of-315) from the field. She also shot 80 percent from the free-throw line and also added 34 steals and 22 blocks. Harrington was named the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference Player of the Week on March 6.

Harrington played her freshman season at Louisville of the Big East Conference, where she appeared in 16 games.  Prior to that, she was a standout at Hickman Mills High School in Kansas City, Mo., where she averaged 22 points, 16 rebounds and five assists per game during her season year. She was a two-time all-state, two-time all-metro and three-time all-conference selection at Hickman Mills.

Harrington joins Heidi Hoff of Brandon, S.D., Margaret McCloud of Rapid City, S.D., Tia Hemiller of Watertown, S.D., and Mika Rodewald of Clare, Iowa, as Coyote recruits for 2012-13.

Compton Drafted in the Sixth Round by Washington

28 Apr

With the 193rd pick in the sixth round of the 2012 NFL Draft, the Washington Redskins selected two-time, University of South Dakota All-American, senior offensive lineman Tom Compton, Saturday afternoon at the historic Radio City Music Hall in New York, N.Y.   Compton becomes the 12th Coyote drafted in school history and the first since 1990.

“This is truly a great feeling to be drafted into the NFL,” Compton said.  “I have worked so hard for this goal and I’m excited to get the opportunity to play.  The entire draft process has been a great one, I knew when I selected my agent I would have a great chance of making my dream a reality.  All of the work put in Training for the combine and pro day prepared me well.”

Compton, a native of Rosemount, Minn., becomes the first draftee USD has had under the current seven-round draft format, and is the first Coyote drafted since Dave Elle in 1990 to the Phoenix Cardinals.  The former Coyote tight end, Elle, a Yankton, S.D., native, was taken in the tenth round at No. 252.  Ordell Braase was the first Coyote drafted in 1954 by the Baltimore Colts.

Coyote Men’s Basketball Adds JUCO Standout

25 Apr

Casper College (Wyo.) standout Tyler Larson has signed a national letter of intent to play basketball at the University of South Dakota, head men’s basketball coach Dave Boots announced Wednesday.  With the signing of Larson, Boots now has inked five for the 2012-13 season.

“Tyler is a big guard with a great work ethic,” Boots said.  “He is a strong defensive player and rebounder who will be a very good all-around player.”

Larson, a 6-3 guard from Las Vegas, Nev., spent the last two years at Casper College under head coach Joel Davidson.  There, he helped lead the team to a 25-9 record in 2011-12 and led the team to the championship game of the Region IX tournament.  He averaged 12.6 points, 4.5 rebounds and 2.6 assists per game.  In the Region IX title game, Larson scored 19 points, with five rebounds and four steals.

As a freshman, he helped lead Casper to a 23-10 record while averaging 9.5 points and 4.6 rebounds per game.

While in high school, Larson played for head coach Chancellor Davis at Desert Pines.  As a junior, Larson was named all-city and all-conference after averaging 13 points and 12 rebounds per game.  As a senior, he averaged an impressive 22 points per game and nine rebounds per contest earning all-city and all-conference honors.
